Every once in a while we come across a golf course that we would like to play again, because we know we can do better the next time. The Wetlands is one of those courses.

The course is one that represents two percent of the golf courses in the US… it wasn’t designed by a fancy golf architect. It is a course designed, built, and operated by the owners. The first 9 holes opened for tee times in 1994, and the second 9 holes followed the next year.

What impressed the Professor was the overall condition of this course. Lush, rich fairways and well kept undulating bent grass greens. However, the Professor noticed that the distance markings were from a painted stripe on the cart path. There are ponds, out of bounds, and cattle grazing grasses that come into play–but only if you let them come into play.

The course has two distinct faces. One nine is fairly open, while the other nine is tight, with trees that persuade your ball to visit them, and ponds that are a swim club for golf balls. This needs to be played with the cool, calm approach that a shot maker uses. Using your hybrid off some tees will save you a shot or two. If you use your driver, the shot I would recommend would be scotch.

Rich, thick but not overly long, the rough was to be avoided–unless you want to contribute an extra stroke or two to the overall effort.

The turf driving range was supplied with White dimplefish pulled from ponds that aren’t really in play but, too often, we discover they turn out to be in play.

The tuition for this course is reasonable: $54 on weekend with a cart before noon, $32 walking or $46 with a cart after noon.

Once the golfer plays this course, and gains a wee bit of local knowledge, he will be rewarded with a links-style experience that has descended from Scotland.
